September 13, 2013 Fire departments bring Walmart fire under control

Orangeville’s Walmart store, currently under construction for a major expansion, has suffered extensive damage as a result of a fire this morning.

The fire departments from Orangeville and Caledon responded to the fire at approximately 10:45 a.m. and had the fire under control within 45 minutes. The fire alarms and sprinklers were activated and the store in the Fairgrounds Shopping Centre was evacuated without incident.

Orangeville Fire Chief Andy Macintosh estimates damages will be hundreds of thousands of dollars and the cause of the fire is still under investigation. The fire started in the electrical room and spread to the roof, according to Chief Macintosh. Firefighters will remain on the scene until mid-afternoon. The Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office has been notified.
